The Daniel Delicata Memorial Association was set up by Steven and Maria Delicata in memory of their son Daniel, on the 16th November, 2002. A gala dinner at the Mediterranean Conference Centre was organized on the same day, for which an astonishing 675 people attended and with the assistance of whom the sum of over Lm7400 was raised. The founders and committee members where overwhelmed by the positive response and the incredible support they received from everyone and this encouraged them to continue with their fund-raising activity. Within the first two months that the Daniel Delicata Memorial Association was set up, a total amount of approximately Lm10,200 was collected. People soon realized that what these parents have started was indeed to be commended and appreciated the fact that although still in deep mourning both Steven and Maria decided, with sheer determination, that their son’s short life will not be in vain, but instead chose to keep Daniel’s memory always alive. One of these people was none other than his Excellency the President of Malta, Prof. Guido Demarco who personally praised their decision to help improve the childrens’ wards in the hospitals of Malta and Gozo. It is a known fact that Daniel’s clip on the fund-raising TV marathon 'Istrina' that was aired at the end of December 2002, prompted many to donate and contributed to the final sum to be a record double of that of the previous year!
Goal and objectives of the Daniel Delicata Memorial Association
The Daniel Delicata Memorial Association’s primary goal to ‘Improve the quality of life for sick children’ is inspired by the plight of young children who just like Daniel needed to spend time in one of the paediatric wards in Malta’s state hospitals. Whilst the hospitals' medical facilities and dedication of the hospitals' staff are certainly not lacking the environment does miss many of those, often small but important, things that can make the stay of its little occupants so much more pleasant. After all, sick children need more than just good medical care and attention. They also need entertainment, activity and comfort.
Daniel like so many other children in his unfortunate situation often required specialist treatment in overseas hospitals. There, Daniel experienced the benefits of that extra effort that made the hospital’s little patients happier.
The immediate and long term objectives of the Daniel Delicata Association are the purchase and donation and/or implementation of items of entertainment, activity and comfort, which we believe will contribute towards achieving this goal.
How can you help us achieve our goal and objectives?
Although a lot has been accomplished, the mission is far from over. The Daniel Delicata Memorial Association has various projects in the pipeline, the most imminent ones being:
- Works at the Young Peoples' Unit, Monte Carmeli Hospital including a total overhaul of the garden, installation of a new kitchen, posters for the hallway, murals in the bedrooms plus the purchase and installation of new computers, airconditioning units and ceiling fans, toys, books and other recreational items.
- Video-conferencing of all lessons from patients’ classrooms to their respective wards in Mater Dei Hospital.
As with everything else a substantial amount of money is always required. The association intends to continue raising money through donations, sponsorships and regular fund raising events. Details of upcoming and past events may be viewed by going to the ‘Events’ page.
If you wish to sponsor the association in any way you may do this by contacting the association’s president Mr. Steven Delicata (see the ‘Contact us’ page).
